Japanese Imari Porcelain Square Charger with Scalloped Rim, Meiji Period
$ 93.87
This 19th century Japanese Imari porcelain charger presents a bold square form with softly scalloped edges, measuring 18 inches by 18 inches with a depth of 3 inches. The larger scale and strong geometry give the piece significant wall or table presence. The central reserve features a jardinière filled with flowering branches rendered in underglaze cobalt blue and iron red, heightened with generous gilt decoration. Surrounding the center is a structured geometric border, beyond which alternating panels depict phoenix, scrolling foliage, stylized landscapes, and textile-inspired motifs. The rich contrast between cobalt blue, iron red, and gold is characteristic of late Meiji export Imari, produced for Western markets with dramatic visual impact. The rim’s gently undulating edge adds sculptural interest and frames the composition with movement. The reverse is decorated in underglaze blue with floral and scrolling motifs and retains a neatly defined foot rim. This charger works exceptionally well as a statement wall-mounted piece, over a console, or layered within a porcelain grouping. Height: 18 in (45.72 cm) Width: 18 in (45.72 cm) Depth: 3 in (7.62 cm)
